A Hough transform global probabilistic approach to multiple-subject diffusion MRI tractography

چکیده
A global probabilistic fiber tracking approach based on the voting process provided by the Hough transform is introduced in this work. The proposed framework tests candidate 3D curves in the volume, assigning to each one a score computed from the diffusion images, and then selects the curves with the highest scores as the potential anatomical connections. The algorithm avoids local minima by performing an exhaustive search at the desired resolution. The technique is easily extended to multiple subjects, considering a single representative volume where the registered high-angular resolution diffusion images (HARDI) from all the subjects are non-linearly combined, thereby obtaining population-representative tracts. The tractography algorithm is run only once for the multiple subjects, and no tract alignment is necessary. We present experimental results on HARDI volumes, ranging from simulated and 1.5T physical phantoms to 7T and 4T human brain and 7T monkey brain datasets.

Multi-subject Diffusion Mri Tractography via a Hough Transform Global Approach
Introduction: Multi-subject tractography in Diffusion-Weighted MRI is a valuable technique for statistical analysis of the brain‟s anatomical connectivity and population studies (e.g., Leemans et al. 2006; Voineskos et al. 2008; Jbabdi et al. 2009). Prior approaches are based on the post processing of tractography results from individual subjects, and generally require aligning the tracts and m...

متن کاملHuman cortical connectome reconstruction from diffusion weighted MRI: The effect of tractography algorithm
Reconstructing the macroscopic human cortical connectome by Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) is a challenging research topic that has recently gained a lot of attention. In the present work, we investigate the effects of intra-voxel fiber direction modeling and tractography algorithm on derived structural network indices (e.g. density, small-worldness and global efficiency). The investigation i...
متن کاملHigh angular resolution diffusion-weighted imaging in mild traumatic brain injury
We sought to investigate white matter abnormalities in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI). We applied a global approach based on tract-based spatial statistics skeleton as well as constrained spherical deconvolution tractography. DW-MRI was performed on 102 patients with mTBI within two months post-injury and 30 control subjects. A ro...
متن کاملDT-MRI Tractography and its Application in Cognitive Neuroscience
Recent advancement of MRI techniques and development of new methods of image analysis have allowed us to study large neural tracts within the human brain. This is based on the principle of diffusion tensor MRI that is similar to that of diffusion-weighted imaging but takes magnitude and direction of the diffusion of water into account. Using this technique we have been able to define large neur...
